Grow your own renewable energy

Plant the right crop – beet, grass, or maize – and you can grow your own energy. Biogas produced by anaerobic digesters is an endlessly renewable energy source. To get the best results and the best advice, choose DLF.

Bioenergy from beet

Beet is an ideal substrate for biogas plants and anaerobic digesters. When the beet has been lifted from the ground it is cleaned to get as little dirt tare content as possible. The beet yields plenty of highly digestible dry matter. Under normal growing conditions, fodder beet is the highest yielding species, producing more than 20 tonnes of dry matter per hectare.

When you add beet to substrates such as slurry, it boosts biogas production. Other options are to digest beet with:

  • Muck and composite
  • Grass silage
  • Whole-crop silage
  • Cereal such as triticale

We recommend the beets EnermaxEnergarciBergman and Magnum for bioenergy production.

Bioenergy from grass

Grass is another high-yielding bioenergy crop, easily grown to produce around 18 tonnes of dry matter per hectare on normal farmland. When combined with slurry, grass and clover-grass mixes improve your biogas yield.

Grass is a perennial crop with good environmental credentials. It doesn't just feed your digester, it supports a healthy crop rotation and improves long-term soil fertility.

For the best results, try combining our high-yielding festuloliums with tall fescue and red clover.
